Artist Statement
Identity Process: Kings & Queens is a long-term project advocating freedom of expression for the transgender community. Revealing what we have been taught to turn our backs on, Lora makes her intense relationships with the people she photographs the point of her work—her curiosity about the stories of their lives, their willingness to share their secrets, and the thrilling discomfort she felt during these encounters. The images capture the space between who someone is; how he presents himself to the world; and how the world responds to this long, hard look. With a focus on the relationship between photographer, subject, and viewer, there is entanglement of the viewer and the ethics of perception. The subject and viewer often become collaborators. Identity Process also demonstrates that this disturbing intimacy, still sometimes considered a weakness, is instead a source of power. The work continues this year with Kerry Norton, presenting his search for freedom and identity in a safe environment. Compassion is never a weakness even under the harsh scrutiny of an intervening camera.
